Challenge: Something new!
Jun. 1st, 2022 09:04 pmWelcome to round three of the wedding poem challenge - "Something New!".
I know that for those of you in the northern hemisphere, you'll be heading towards longer warmer days, and maybe that is good reading weather for you (I know it is for me). And treating yourself to something new -- recently published, recently acquired, a new enthusiasm -- is a great way to celebrate that. For those of us heading towards hibernation in the southern hemisphere (yes, I know, what I call cold is what some of you call shorts weather), curling up with a brand new book is still a treat.
So, with no further ado, tell us what new thing you are hoping to read in the month of June!

Date: 2022-06-01 01:09 pm (UTC)I had been expecting to be in the middle of reading Hugo nominees at this point, so I thought I had the whole challenge sorted. And then I've flaked on the whole thing. Instead, umm. There is a pile of new-to-me books -- bought this year, although many are second hand--and I really really want to have read at least two of them this month. Stretch goal is four.

Date: 2022-06-01 03:00 pm (UTC)I want to read the six Witcher novels, after buying a box set last month. Not new, but new-to-me. I've read the first two books (The Last Wish & Sword of Destiny) which are both collections of short stories, but the next five books were written and planned as An Epic Fantasy Saga and I'm looking forward to experiencing them. The first two books are definitely rather 90s-fantasy-written-by-a-bloke in the way women characters are treated, but they were compelling and often funny reading. I do like the authorial voice which is generally unfussy plain English, with an often dry wit, and I can't help wondering whether the original Polish has the same feel to it.
I have a pre-order due on 7 June, The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes by Cat Sebastian, and want to waste no time reading it on arrival.

Date: 2022-06-02 01:25 pm (UTC)Ooh! I have that book somewhere in my TBR. I've never read any Jackson, so if I find where I put it I might move it up the priority list.

Date: 2022-06-01 06:18 pm (UTC)I have a new book on the docket after a post over in fandom_secrets that will be a new-to-me author in a favorite genre, but also.... I think I would have read it in June anyway! (Wise Child)
I have a lot of ebook backlog, so I think finishing the one I bought most recently will be a nice way to dig into that and to engage with the challenge to my satisfaction. (The Venus Project)

Date: 2022-06-02 01:25 pm (UTC)I feel that books you were going to read anyway are a two pieces of cake situation, in that you get to count them twice :)

Date: 2022-06-01 11:31 pm (UTC)1. The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater
2. Murder at the Magnolia Inn by Helena Marchmont
3. The Song of Achilles by Madeleine Miller
4. Double Cross by Ben Macintyre
5. The Alchemist of Fire and Fortune by Gigi Pandian
I'm expecting 2 library loans:
* The Man who Died Twice by Richard Osman
* The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams.
Before I'm going to get through any of the above though, I need to finish reading some that are most definitely not new to me - War and Peace and The Cranford Chronicles which have been taking... a long time.
