glinda: just trying to read (books/reading)
[personal profile] glinda posting in [community profile] readingtogether
So, based on the response to the last post I think we can safely say that people would like to do the thing. (Thank you for keeping yourselves entertained while I fell off the internet for a week and a bit, sorry about that.) So here we have the sign up post!

Basically this can be as big or as little of a commitment as you feel up to. Dependant on your reading speed/available time you can sign up to read one book or ten books. Doesn't matter how big or small the book, only that its something that has been taking up space on your book shelf (or case/box/tottering pile beside your bed) for some time and you've never quite got round to it.

All you need to do is comment below with the book(s) you want to read this month.

Each Friday in November I will make a check-in post, and you can comment with your progress so far. Celebrating little achievements as well as big ones is heartily encouraged.

Good luck - I'm not familiar with many on your list - although I do have both a Naomi Novik (Uprooted?) on the pile somewhere and The Colour Purple is on my list of ones to borrow from the library.

I plan to read:

* the Iliad in either Lattimore or Fagles translation

And here are my stretch goals, in no particular order:

* a book of writing instruction, perhaps one of the how-to-memoirs or Stephen King's On Writing
* something else for the knowledge it will gain me
* Once Broken Faith, Seanan McGuire
* the novella accompanying McGuire's Once Broken Faith; I am not sure of its title
* something else fun

I found Stephen King's On Writing interesting when I read it a couple of years ago - I'm not a fan of his work (I don't read much in the way of 'horror') and I found it less 'how to' than I was expecting but interesting nonetheless.

Well, it is a memoir, as I understand. But yeah.

I have such a towering To Be Read pile; I'll be signing up for this!

It'll be a day or so before I can pick books, though - I need to get the shelves organised enough that there's a single To Be Read Pile to choose from. :D

My aim is to try and read 10 (not sure I'll make it at the moment but earlier in the year I was managing a lot more than I am of late).

I've got a list of 15 to pick from and to be honest and upfront I've started some of them and been trying to get through them for a while but things have been going very slowly.

Here's the starting list....

1. The Riddle by Alison Croggon (this is a library book that contrary to the evidence of having had to renew twice already I am actually enjoying, just I'm progressing very slowly through it)
2. The Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
3. Dead in the Water by Ann Granger
4. Black Butler volume 20
5. Married to a Bedouin by Marguerite van Geldermasen (started this a while ago, but keep putting it down in favour of other things)
6. The Crowded Shadows by Celine Kiernan
7. The Shack by Wm P. Young (as with number five started a while ago but was struggling to get into it - am determined to give it one more go and if it doesn't start to gain my interest in short order, I intend abandoning it for good)
8. Shon the Taken by Tanith Lee (this has been my handbag book for carrying to work for a few weeks, but I haven't got far with it as I've been too busy during my lunch break to spend more than a couple of minutes reading)
9. War of the Worlds by H G Wells
10. Mistborn : The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson
11. Black Butler volume 21
12. Firesong by William Nicholson
13. The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley
14. When Sky Fell : In Search of Atlantis by Rand Flem Ath
15. Grim Tuesday by Garth Nix

Wow, 10 is a great goal, I hope you'll manage it! Don't know the other books on your list but I really liked War of the Worlds when I read it.

I want to read All The Books. I will go for the marginally more sensible goal of hitting my targets: 16 books bought prior to 2016, and 30 books overall.

Also, preferably these specifically:

Ben Aaronovitch, Foxglove Summer.
Ben Aaronovitch, The Hanging Tree.
Ilona Andrews, Magic Binds.
Marie Brennan, In Ashes Lie.
Mike Brooks, Dark Sky.
Becky Chambers, The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet.
Mira Grant, Deadline.
Mira Grant, Blackout.
Joseph Hansen, Skinflick.
Seanan McGuire, An Artificial Night.
Seanan McGuire, Late Eclipses.
Sylvia Moreno-Garcia, Certain Dark Things.
Emma Newman, After Atlas.
Cherie Priest, The Family Plot.
John Scalzi, The Ghost Brigades.

I'm not sure if it is -- maybe yesterday? But I had an advance copy.

I've also just made a list of books to read by the end of the year to meet my reading goal of books-pre-2016. Uh. Oh dear:

Six of Crows, by Leigh Bardugo.
Foxglove Summer, by Ben Aaronovitch.
The Girl With All the Gifts, by Mike Carey.
The Tower at Stony Wood, by Patricia McKillip.
Dreams of Shreds and Tatters, by Amanda Downum.
The Ghost Brigades, by John Scalzi.
Vengeance Road, by Erin Bowman.
Bear Daughter, by Judith Berman.
Shadows, by Robin McKinley.
The Steerswoman, by Rosemary Kirstein.
Bloodshot, by Cherie Priest.
Hellbent, by Cherie Priest.
The Sealed Letter, by Emma Donoghue.
Leviathan Wakes, by James S.A. Corey.
The Boy With the Porcelain Blade, by Den Patrick.
Natural Causes, by James Oswald.
Time and Again, by Jack Finney.
Hero, by Perry Moore.
Magic Study, by Maria V. Snyder.
Fire Study, by Maria V. Snyder.
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, by Becky Chambers.
Daughter of Mystery, by Heather Rose Jones.
Sold for Endless Rue, by Madeleine E. Robbins.
A History of the World in 12 Maps, by Jerry Brotton.
Cleopatra's Heir, by Gillian Bradshaw.
Some Kind of Fairytale, by Graham Joyce.
Burning Bright, by Melissa Scott.
The Fire's Stone, by Tanya Huff.
Sylvester, by Georgette Heyer.
The Death of Captain America, by Ed Brubaker.
Blackwood, by Gwenda Bond.
The Ghost Bride, by Yangtze Choo.
Amelia Earhart: The Mystery Solved, by Elgen M. Long.
Newt's Emerald, by Garth Nix.
Two Americas, by Ed Brubaker.
Road to Reborn, by Ed Brubaker.
Captain America: Reborn, by Ed Brubaker.
Genome: Autobiography of a Species, by Matt Ridley.
Masters of Command, by Barry Strauss.
Death of a Unicorn, by Peter Dickinson.
Last Argument of Kings, by Joe Abercrombie.
Machine, by Jennifer Pelland.

It doesn't have to be precisely this list, but these are the ones that seem likely. Eek. Any encouragement is appreciated...
