November Group Read: Check-in the Third!

Tis the end of the third week of the challenge (sort of, this year November's dates don't fall out particulary well to divide the challenge into neatish weeks when you have check-ins on Fridays) hopefully books are providing all of you with some comfort in these troubled times...

Are we starting to flag a bit or have we triumphs to share? Anyone defeat a book that's been taunting them for long and weary? Share your reading triumphs and disasters in the comments below.

Woohoo! Well done - and enjoying it too by the sounds of it.

Go you! Are the sequels worth reading if one enjoyed the first Temeraire book? I've been waffling whether to read on.
shanaqui: Akihiko from Persona 3, punch. ((Akihiko) Smack a bitch)

I remember them being so, and a fellow blogger has been posting about them lately and inspiring me greatly to get on with rereading/catching up. Link!

Thank you! I'll keep an eye out for them at the book flea market in two weeks.

This week I've finished Shon the Taken by Tanith Lee which was okay but not great. I also finished up Black Butler Volume 21 a series that I continue to enjoy and Married to a Bedouin by Marguerie van Geldermasen which for some reason seemed to grasp my attention and I fairly flew through it this time (I'd been struggling with it for a while in the sense that when I put it down I felt no compunction to pick it back up again even though it was interesting). That makes seven books finished so far this month.

I'm about halfway through A Discovery of Witches now (my on the bus reading) and also halfway through Grim Tuesday by Garth Nix, next up will be The Shack which I'm not convinced I'm going to get through (I've already started it twice - this is its final attempt). If I get through GT and continue with ADoW and try TS, I'll consider the challenge a success and may then move onto books other than those on the list - possibly - not definitely.

Ooh, have you read the Keys to the Kingdom series before? They got better with each book; the later days of the week started breaking my heart, heh. But in a good way.

No, this is my first time and I was holding off on starting until I had them all (I was missing Friday and Sunday - I'm still missing Sunday, but at least I can get most of the way through the series and maybe by that time I can justify a visit to Amazon!). I've read some other Garth Nix though - the original Abhorsen trilogy (I know there's another one out now, but I've not even seen a copy of that and will probably need to re-read the others first).

Yay for finishing seven books! How are you liking A Discovery of Witches?

It's good so far (which is a relief as I have a hard copy on the shelf of the second in the series, so at the moment, I'll be happy to continue with that series (and will be on the look out for part 3).

I'm on... 16 books read this month, which is behind, but I blame having three biology assignments due. Whyyy.

[personal profile] peaceful_sands 2016-11-19 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
Still, that's not too shabby for only 19 days into the month. Hope the biology assignments are going well. Have you enjoyed the books that you have read?

Almost all of them! One or two were a bit more mediocre (I didn't enjoy Peter Dickinson's Death of a Unicorn, for one) but mostly squeeful. Especially my reread of Heyer's The Talisman Ring!

16 books is nothing to scoff at! I remember finding Death of a Unicorn to be pretty meh. I also was hoping for more unicorns.

[personal profile] shanaqui 2016-11-19 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know! But it's a little slower than I hoped/my usual, because biology. (I love biology, but not when it gets in the way of books.) I knew Death of a Unicorn wasn't fantasy, but... I don't know, it was just so flat and boring, even given I knew the genre.

I'm in a Sherlock Holmes sort of mood so I'm currently reading A Study in Lavender. I'm on track for my goal even though this November is a busy month for me.

Hm, I'm sure I had that somewhere, but don't think I ever got round to reading it... Good?

Like most anthologies it has ups and downs, but overall it's enjoyable.

Well done for staying on track with your goal despite 'busyness'! (that must be a word, right?)
