So, Friday, I picked up a book, with the intention of it being The Book for the weekend. Saturday, I forgot to put it in my bag, then we went to three bookshops, and when we stopped for afternoon tea (well, coffee and cake), I needed something to read, and I had this fabulous set of options.

So, ah, I read all of Malka Older's The Mimicing of Known Successes (novella) instead.

True, I did reading, and something that has been on the list for rather a long time.

This was a planned bookshop trip, and I aim to visit the first one, where I bought six novellas, once to twice a year, because it is exactly that expensive each time (this is a budgetted expense).

Oooh, going to that first bookshop sounds like such a treat! Expensive but what amazing finds. :D

Congratulations on getting some reading done, even if not the planned The Weekend Book.

I read a bunch of manga!

I read Vol. 8 of The Apothecary Diaries, which was still too much of a character I don't like but not as much as I'd feared, and tied up enough plotlines to hopefully start a new arc.

I also read Vol. 2 of The Dragon's Betrothed, which ends with a TBC even though it feels pretty wrapped up. I feel like I should have re-read Vol. 1, and probably will and then read this one again.

And then The Villainess and the Demon Knight Vol. 2, which, like Vol. 1 is about half porn, half political and adventure story.

I have too many novels going already, but I might start priest's Stars of Chaos/Sha Po Lang before bed anyway.

That sounds like a fabulous mix. I started The Apothecary Diaries, then decided that Manga Up was no good on my phone, and then I haven't tranferred to anything else.

I hear you on too many novels. It is the refrain of my life these days!

I finally finished Galsan Tschinag, so thank you for hosting the challenge this weekend. What I didn’t know when I picked it up was that it was part of a trilogy and it ended sort of mid sentence on a cliffhanger.
I read a couple more pages in my other book (Arud Pragasam)

Congrats on finishing the book! That is a bit of a shame with the trilogy and the abrupt finish.

That sucks a bit about the abrupt ending and the trilogy thing. Is the next book at least out already or not yet?

Got no reading at all done, at least none in books, I read a ton on reddit, aha.

I am currently reading "Big Brother" by Lionel Shriver. I loved her previous novel "We need to talk about Kevin" (which I think was filmed with Ezra Miller as Kevin but I haven't seen the film yet) but this one is slow to start. I hope to read a few chapters more and then decide whether to DNF or try to see it through.

I didn't read much this weekend, because I had an unexpected (but welcome!) guest; however, lately I've been reading a lot & listening to a lot of audiobooks (thank you, Libby, for sparing me from bankruptcy). My recommendations:

• The Divine Cities Trilogy by Robert Jackson Bennett. A post-apocalyptic world with a murder-mystery feel. What happens when your society has direct connection to the power of the gods - & then those gods are slain?
  
• Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. Kingsolver takes the story of David Copperfield & sets it in Appalachia at the outbreak of the OxyContin crisis. Reading this novel while my mom (who lives on the edge of Appalachia) is dealing with pain management issues following her latest back surgery was chilling, to say the least.
  
• Project Hail Mary written by Andy Weir & narrated by Ray Porter. This audiobook won the 2022 Audie Award for the Audiobook of the Year. Reminiscent of The Martian, it's another great hard-science action adventure with the survival of humanity being only part of the stakes! Ray Porter brings the nerdy main character to life & the choice to incorporate minimal sound effects was a good one.
  
• Gideon the Ninth written by Tamsyn Muir & narrated by Moira Quirk. I found reading this book to be a bit of a drag, but listening to it was super-fun! Moira does a surprisingly wide range of voices for the cavaliers & necromancers of the Nine Houses of the Necrolord's Empire & she doesn't stumble over all the long character names, like I did while reading.
