I finished Nona the ninth, which was a bit longer than I'd realised -- the perils of borrowing ebooks from the library! I got about halfway through Don't Bite the Sun and realised I was overly irritable about the general setting. And I've managed about half of Ocean's Echo, which I like well enough, but it is too similar to Everina Maxwell's previous novel, while not being related except in setting. There are a couple of tropes that I struggle with which are dominant here*.

Sadly, I'd managed to pick a set of books that were similar enough in the amount stressed the characters are, so instead of making more progress on my fiction picks, I picked up a non-fiction book about presenting data.

* possibly spoilery complaint I made to partner: I'm on page 96 and two of the characters have only started talking to each other, rather than talking past each other).

I finished one of the library books and started on the second. I'm debating if I want to acquire the last of the series, because checking the goodreads reviews, the series goes hard into a no homo swerve that I know is just going to make me angry. Three excellent books, one pretty darned good one, one that's pretty good so far- and one intralibrary doesn't have that I'm going to want to chuck across the room. (But then again, if I buy it, I won't feel bad about the inevitable chucking.)

Yay for finishing the library book! That is frustrating on the not being able to get your hands on the one that can be predicted to annoy though.

Yeah, I just finished skimming through the next in the series and it just gets bad, alas. I think I'm done even without the last one, though I might pick up copies of the first three and just pretend that's all there are.

I finished Claire Keegan and it was a good book. Didn‘t read much of the blurb which is why I was afraid something terrible would happen halfway through (the blurb, which I read afterward, spoke about a tragedy but an ultimately hopeful book).

Yay! Ultimately hopeful is my preference on these kinds of things; I can deal with some amount of tragedy, as long as it isn't unrelentingly grim.

I finished a couple chapters in my big chonking book (the role of cognitive science in linguistics and philosophy(, then decided to read something else entirely (a collection of essays by Brian O'Nolan/Flann O'Brien/Myles na gCopaleen). Not as a form of procrastination, but because I last-minute decided I want to give it as a housewarming gift and have yet to actually finish it.

Okay maybe also as a bit of procrastination as well.

On the one hand, the big chonking book sounds fascinating. On the other, I imagine that a couple of chapters is enough to cause the need for a lie down! Working on finishing a different books sounds like a great way to take a break (I say, as a long time parallel reader)

I read some more of "Trigun: Maximum" by Yasuhiro Nightow, "The Ill-Made Mute" by Cecillia Dart-Thornton, and "Golden Terrace" vol 1 by Cang Wu Bin Bai, so I made some good progress! Didn't finish all that much, but I enjoyed what I read of Golden Terrace and hope to finally finish vol 1 this month, since it's been sitting on my desk for ages. I'm writing a lot of fic these days so I don't have a ton of time, but I am enjoying myself, generally!

Well done on so much progress. On the one hand, not much time for reading, but on the other, writing is a great alternative. I'd be interested in hearing about the Dart-Thornton one, because the only person I remember commenting on it later turned out to be someone with such divergent taste from mine that I can't rely on anything as predictive!

I don't particularly have good things to say about it lol I've started skimming it because it's massively over-written/purple prosy, I find the plot increasingly boring and stupid, and all the characters are idiots lol I'd still like to finish it, but it's very slow going.

I finished When Society Becomes an Addict and made good progress on the Durrenmatt biography, so I'm pleased with what I managed.
