72-hour trainreads challenge

Hello everyone. This weekend I am going to be on trains for about 12 hours over three days, and I would like to spend more of it reading and less of it doomscrolling. To join in the challenge, set a realistic goal or two in the comments and I'll make a check-in post in about 72 hours to see how we all do.

Good luck! I like the fact that you have fallbacks/options in mind. ♥

I'm going to finish at least one book and 10 fanfics.

Nice. It has never occurred to me to put fic on one of these lists!

Yeah I've never really been actively reading as much fanfic as I'd like to, but I've been getting more into it over the last few years, especially since I got back into reading more novels last October. A friend on here posted a fanfic tracker and I've been using it to keep track of stuff and really digging it.

I'd be interested in hearing more about this fanfic tracker ....

It's just a personal one! Here's an outline, which you post in an entry at the end of the month:

Fic count:
Word count:

Notable fics:

And then you make little summaries for the notable ones, explaining why you liked them (or whatever you want).

Interesting! I'm shockingly bad at remembering to update such things -- at best I might remember to go back through the AO3 and work out what I bookmarked.

Yeah so am I lol Basically I added a new tab to my Excel book reading tracker and just keep the spreadsheet open in the background on my computer, and update it as I read. It's still difficult, but it works.

At the moment, "The Owl House". But depending on how fast I get through this tag, that might change. I've got a whole folder of tags to browse when I have time.

Sounds like a plan! Being nosey, any idea what book?

I'd like to make enough progress on The Petticoat Parade (one chapter down) or Why you should give a f*ck about farming (just the intro so far) that I can finish one on the train to work on monday morning.

It is specifically about prostitution in my home town in the early parts of the 20th century, and so far has had so many interesting details. I've almost never read a historical book where I can visualise all the places being talked about (not the ones from the town inland so much, because it has been a couple of decades since I've visited there).

My goals:

  • Keep up with my daily chapters of The Wood for the Trees (Richard Fortey) - ~75 pages
  • Finish rereading Dreadful Company (Vivian Shaw) - ~300 pages
  • Read Bitter (Akwaeke Emezi) - ~270 pages
  • Read 100 pages of Hidden Hands (Mary Wellesley)
  • Stretch goal: reread Ancillary Mercy (Ann Leckie) - 328 pages

This might be a bit too ambitious, with also needing to study and wanting to play FFXIV, plus some anxiety stuff going on. We'll see!

I'm working, so I think my goal will be to spend a little bit of time on a video game demo (Bad North), maybe a VHS tape from the crate (random pick), and maybe some actual reading if I can round up the brain power (unknown).
